Review

With more and more games turning to the field of extreme sports, it was only a matter of time before one game tried to tackle them all. Sega Extreme Sports tries to do just that and does a pretty good job of it.

Rather than offer you the chance to play each sport individually like a sort of decathlon, Sega have opted for the rather original choice of rolling them into one, well sort of.

The levels, which are structured in such a way that you are completing in an ever-changing non-stop race containing at least three events sees you jumping on snowboards, bungee jumping, mountain biking, hand gliding and even sandboarding in a game that offers you that "I've got to get to the next stage feeling".

Couple this with a gruelling Championship mode and the usual array of time trails and bonus tracks and what you end up with is a very nice refreshing change. What Sega have managed to do is create a game that doesn't get bogged down in any one topic, but gives you a sample of them all in a fast-paced race. --Stuart Miles

  • Rating 4 stars Sega Extreme Sports - extremely addictive 15/07/2002 Read full review>>
I bought this game just to see what could be done with these so-called "extreme" sports in a videogame & have been very pleasantly surprised...the game is great fun & entirely addictive, the difficulty level being set just about right.

First off, the graphics: there are occasional signs of pop-up & slowdown, but these are more than offset by the enormous terrains, well-modelled characters &, best of all, some very impressive lighting effects - as you come to the brow of a hill, the sun almosts blinds you...brilliant! It all shows that the much-maligned Dreamcast can still easily hold its own with so-called "superior" next generation consoles.

The music is entirely appropriate for each sport, & the voices distinctive & amusing - listen out for comments as you bump someone out of the way.

With a plethora of sports/simulation games on the market for all consoles, this one offers a good variety of arcade-style racing & track & field style button pressing/timing, & the inclusion of 6 different disciplines keeps it fresh & interesting...

This is definetely one of the best and most addictive games I have ever played. The graphics are georgous, the playability is second to none and the difficulty level is just right to keep you coming back without thinking the ending goal is impossible.

This is a game to buy no matter what genre you're into. The only short coming of the game is that to get some of the extra tracks you must go onto their site via your console.

    Fantastic!!! 5 Starts

First thing you notice, is that this game is made with style. Wire frame models of ATV:s, bikes and boarders zoom and rotate in the background, while you choose which one of the cool and trendy adrenaline addicts you want to be. Selection screen is absolutely stylish and shows the difference between game houses and Game Houses; those guys in AM2 or what ever Segas in-house section is responsible of this game, really know what they are doing. They also know how to "push the limit" of our beloved Dreamcast. Graphics are really good and theres no drop of framerate in any situation. And then theres the music. Sound track suits in the game like bruises to mountain bike; bruised bike sorts boys out of men, music crowns the extreme stylishnes of the game and proves that coders are professionals. But still somenthing is missing. Gameplay is empty and hollow. ATV (all terrain vehicle) driving is fun but too easy, and tracks are way too short. Which is the case with all of the six game modes: hand gliding, base jumping, mountain biking, boarding, bungee jumping and ATV racing. The game consists of brief sections of "adrenaline rush", where you try to go through the tracks in allocated time. Basicly the game is arcade racing game transferred to extreme sports world. It is good prover of Dreamcast muscle and Segas programming knowledge, but too hollow for a game. It seems that game have been rushed to publishing due the ongoing console war. Which is sad: it could have been a new "Wipeout"; the game that sold the playstation to wider audiences by beeing so stylish that it is. A missed opportinity really.

This is a great game let down only by its lack of options. If there was a sort of seperate part to the game like a option to play what sport you want it would turn out to be a 5 * S * T * A * R * game. The game itself is exactly what it says on the box........extreme sports. You race around various courses using a snow board,a bicycle,a quad bike,a hand glider and a bungee cord. The only extra option in the game is to be able to download new courses off the internet(roughly about ten)making it a much longer game. What also would be nice and make the game THE BEST would be if you could download extra sports. But there isn't so it doesn't matter. I think you should buy it if your thinking of doing. Now where's me bungee cord gone.Just move me quad bike out the way and me skteboard.Eh......whats this hand glider doing here and why have I got a bicycle.Oh there's me chord. Now lets just hook it here..........oh and here and now I jump.........
