I bought COD 4 in November 2008, and then recevied COD World at War for Christmas, on the basis that I loved COD 4 so much.
I am now splitting my time between both games. Both are equally brilliant in my opinion. Some have criticised the move to WWII, but I see this as a plus point. I now have a modern warfare game, and a game from a completely different era in COD WAW, which is not trying to be improvement on COD 4. Fighting tactics in each are a bit different as a result, and the array of weaponry available is brillinat.
I therefore highly recommend COD WAW. This is a brillinat game, and the fact it is in a different era to COD 4 is a real advantage in my view. The single player game is really unbelieveably good, and then you go online, and hours will vanish as you remain transfixed to the screen, and just promise yourself, "one last game" for the fourteenth time.

The 1 player missions are really fun and the Nazi zombie mode that you unlock is a good to play with your mates on but the online play is really really boring and that is why Call of Duty 4 was so good. Thank God Call of Duty 6 is going to be made by the people who made COD4 and it is is going to be Modern Warfare again YAY!!!!!!!!!!. COD5 4/10

CALL OF DUTY WORLD AT WAR THE NAME SHOULD BE CALLED C O D AT WORLD WAR RATING TO THESE GAMES ARE BELOW POOR AND IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE NEW YEAR, AND I AM SORRY.
-
This game is brilliant the single player is amazing and you get a load of new things like flamethrower and bayonet, you can also do co op wich is good aswell as online missions where you have 3 other people helping you, the online is good however maybe its just me but in most of my games i have connection problems and its very frustrating when you die.

It's an epic return to form for CoD with World at War.
However World at War in the eyes of CoD translates as America & Russia, Quote me if I'm wrong but didn't Britain, France, Australia, Canada.. well in short THE WORLD take part in WWII? If yes then why is it called World at War?
I do like this game, it has all the nice touches CoD's of old put it + Bayonets. Awesome.
CoD4 In my gods honest opinion was tragically awful. Once again AMERICA takes on UNNAMED TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS (Iraqi's) in UNNAMED LOCATIONS (Iraq) and features it's lap dog GREAT BRITAIN fighting the reformed SOVIET UNION! It was diabolical, I'll admit it had some nice touches here and there but overall it was just Pro-American tosh. If your a COD4 fan-boy please go & die in the nearest fire. If they're aren't any try drinking the draino under the sink.
But they did some good with CoD World At War. It's still a tad to linear for my liking, but I do like the gun battles you can have a certain points, I love the banzai attacks, the flame thrower, BAYONETS and of course I love the gore! Finally a WWII game with some proper gore. Well done.
They've also seemed to steer the game into a more darker setting there's a sense of dread an terror, almost horror that they've worked into the story single player whatever you want to call it. Very nice touch indeed, it does kind of supress the usual gung-ho American attitude that most WWII FPS games possess MoH being a typical YOU Vs Germany, Hitler & The Third Reich.
The soundtrack is odd. It's hard to explain it, it's modern for sure so it doesn't really suit the game. It also has some horrid screaching at times, strange. It's not good & it's not bad. It's just ...
There's alot to like in this CoD but there's also alot to improve on, it's miles better than CoD4
Now for some negatives.
Still very Pro-American.
No Other countries take part other than Russia. & of course they included a dreadful tank mission, please fella's if your going to do a tank mission do it properly, linear doesn't do it justice.
There is a blatant rip off of the film Enemy At The Gates. (I know they've done them before but before they were subtle. This one took this p***)
What was the deal with the Black-Cats mission? Tip of the hat to them I'm sure but it just didn't fit with the rest of the game.
The AI is quite pants as they only seem interested in shooting you & not your squadmates.
There are some awful online exploits & bugs which still plague the game today.
The online dogs were a bad choice in my opinion. Two bites and your dead or one bite and all you need to finish you off is a slap on the back. Ridiculous.
Online vehicles only include two tanks, which only occur between the Russians & Germans, why not the Americans & Japanese?
You can only play 2 player co-op mode on one console and not 4. Highly dissapointing.
There's a ton of other stuff I love & hate about the game but the good out weighs the bad, partly because a big % of that is because it's back in WWII a proper war not some stupid modern conflict, sorry I mean walkover.
**SPOILER WARNING**
My final thought on the game is at the end of the single player campaign, once completed you unlock a game mode called German Nazi Zombies. WHICH IS AMAZING!
