It's hard to make racing games seem fresh or original nowadays, but not if you put a bit of thought into it - or even better some high explosives. Split/Second is a street racer, not the illegal kind but one that's show on reality TV all across the country.

Knocking your opponents into the odd brick wall is a traditional part of any racing game, but here you also race to be the first to trigger huge explosions rigged all along the track. Time it right and you can not only flatten rivals with a ton of falling concrete but you can drastically alter the course of the track to your advantage.

You've got to be a skilled racer as well as a demolitions expert though, with your access to the explosions dependent on how well you're driving and what moves you can pull off. Get it right and you'll not only beat the pack, you'll flatten it.

  • Pick-up-and-play
  • Skilful driving wins you track control ability
  • Spectacular Power Play events
  • Wreck your rivals by wrecking your track
  • Open new routes and speed ahead of the competition
  • Spectacular interactive track elements.

  • Rating 5 stars Good stuff! 20/08/2010 Read full review>>
A twist on the racing genre, and surely a new series has begun, this game is fun and entertaining. It can also be quite challenging and frustration duely follows. However, I do recommend buying this game as it is good for both multi-player and single players as the season mode is extensive and tricky.

ok its an arcade game like burnout except as well as the crashes being so over the top and lovly you get to perform powerplays which blow the scenery up and in most cases destroy your opponents untill they respawn.Powerplays can be had by generating energy by drifting around corners, jumping over ramps etc and slipstreaming behind the opposition.Anything from cars on fire being hurled across a road to planes crashing infrount of you go on this game and its hilarious fun to drop a building on someone. There are two types of powerplays strong and oh my god, plenty of cars to choose from and 12 tracks aint bad although you may tire as the 1 player roles on.Online is so hectic but be warned if you havent put the time in then online will crush you...everyone has the top cars and tons of practice so my advice is complete the 1 player to get all the cars and experience or interestingly buy all the cars and open the tracks on xbox live.Shortlived it is and much more suited for those after the pub sort of affairs but well worth a punt at this price.Atleast it does something different with the scenery being the weopon.Ive never seen this before and if i had its not been implemented this well. This i feel is a milestone game that will be overlooked...all car games will have to do this now.Buy it...dirt cheap and an adrenaline rush but like all rushes it will lower. But i garantee youll dust it off and have a bash later even if its just to prove a point on 2 player splitscreen.....oh and message to my nephew.....3 wins to nill now go back to yorkshire and practice more lol.
  • Rating 4 stars Great racer (for those who don't like racers - and those who do) 12/08/2010 Read full review>>
A cracking little racing game which may very much appeal to people who don't like the genre staples such as Forza, PGR and Gran Turismo. Really entertaining single player campaign which kept me hooked for many hours. Wasn't too keen on the Air Attack / Revenge races but this made up very little of the game. Very impressive visually and power plays never get old.

I can imagine this being a great time on couch co-op or online but I didn't play it multiplayer. Thoroughly recommended game that plays like arcade races of old (actually quite difficult to crash etc - unless a huge power play gets you) and the car handling is VERY user friendly (I only found myself accidentally going the wrong way round the track a few times in about 10+ hours of play whereas in Forza etc I'd have been going the wrong way more times on one track than I did on the whole single player campaign here!) Get it and enjoy it for what it is - a visually, aurally accomplished racing game with a sound learning curve.
  • Rating 5 stars Amazing! 04/08/2010 Read full review>>
I bought Split Second after viewing some videos on YouTube and I'm 100% in love for this game: graphics and animations are amazing, the "TV show" atmosphere is really immersive and the overall idea of triggering explosions in order to blow your opponents away and change the landscape is really fun.

As far as longevity is concerned, after several hours I'm still enjoying it a lot so I strongly suggest it to everybody.

PS: I'm not a big gamer but I tend to have some free time during the Summer which I like to spend playing some new games every year.

  • Rating 3 stars A fun game bu very repetitive with not many tracks. 23/07/2010 Read full review>>
Its a fun and good game but there are only 12 tracks and you redo the same races again and again in the campaign if you want all the achievments. And the latest tracks are less finished and less fun than the firsts (for example no route change).
